Do You Have a Plan if You Get a Mandatory Evacuation Order

This week while I was away at a Women's Council of Realtors Conference in Northern California, my husband was at home with our two dogs.

He got a knock on the door at noon and when he opened the door, it was a Deputy Sheriff letting him know that there was a major gas leak nearby and he had to evacuate RIGHT THEN.

He put on the dogs halters and leashes and put them in the car and drove out. About this time he called me to alert me of the situation. We thought the best thing to do was take the dogs to our regular place about 8 miles away and board them for the night. Of course we had no appointment but they welcomed our fur babies with open arms and that made one less thing for us to worry about.

Do you know what you would do in an emergency? Do you have an evacuation plan? Do you have your plan written down where you can find it ASAP? I know these things because I used to live in a woodsy area and several times we were on standby to evacuate so I made a list of items to put in my car so if I was in shock or extremely distraught, I did not have to stop and think. Certain things on my list included:

  • Medications for anyone in the household
  • Get seniors and small children ready to leave house.
  • Round up the pets and get their collars and halters on plus meds and dog food for them too.
  • Important documents: deeds, pink slips, birth certificates, receipts of household items, wills or trusts etc.
  • Laptop Computers, purses and wallets.
  • Pictures that cannot be replaced
  • Jackets or Sweaters
  • Baby or Elderly items necessary: Walkers, Wheelchairs, Diaper Bags, Change of Clothing, Baby Food.

Now sometimes on evacuation standby, you have time to get these things together but other times you have to go right then as in our case. If the Fire, Flood or a Hazardous Gas leak is eminent, then you must just grab all in household and go. Always a good idea to back your car out of the garage and down at the lower end of your driveway or in front of the house. If the house would start burning, your garage could go up in flames with your car inside.

At this time I want to thank the Pet Boarding place, Renaissance Pet Resort and Spa, where we took our darlings for safe keeping so we did not have to worry about them getting out of the car or barking with all the confusion going out with other residents and their pets coming and going.
