Nakedness and Real Estate Should Not Mix

Nakedness and Real Estate Should Not Mix

I have heard stories and seen news blurbs on TV about embarrassing moments in listed homes for sale but in the past couple of years I have seen it in person.

The first time it occurred I was showing a commercial office to a client and we were given the lockbox code and assured that we could inspect the entire office space. I opened the door and there were no lights on but I thought I heard something. I commented "Big Rats". So we starting walking through the rooms and the one on the right was locked. Interesting as the listing agent said it was open! So we continued on and went through all the rooms which took us back to the front near the door. My client says "Oh look, that locked door is now open." So we walked in and there in the middle of this room is a huge, worn out sofa and the strong smell of perfume. My client and I were both surprised and a little embarrassed and I said "Well, I guess all my tugging on the door caused it to open!" We both laughed but I am sure he thought the same thing I did that someone had been in that room having sex. Oh my gosh...get a room and not a vacant office room.

But the best example was a Broker's Open I had scheduled. The homeowner had moved but allowed her son and several of his college buddies to live there. I stopped by the night before to tell them I was stopping by the next morning with some other agents. Left a note and some donuts on the counter about 6pm the evening before. Apparently I didn't do enough to warn the boys living there.

So my office showed up at 10:30 am. I always open the door and yell "REALTOR" just to make sure no one is there. About 15 agent came filling in the kitchen/great room area and a few were already grabbing a donut when all of a sudden the upstairs hall bathroom door opened  up and a naked man walked out. It was an open staircase so we all had a good view of the 2nd floor hallway. A few screams and many embarrassed laughs from the agents filled the room. He stopped dead in his tracks and saw all these men and women looking up at him in all his nakedness and quickly ran back into the bathroom. A few minutes later he came out wrapped in a white towel and ran down to his room to change. We all calmed down and went through the rest of the home. He came out dressed, apologized and left quickly.

Embarrassing as it was, it was a funny experience for all of us. He told me later he thought the donuts were nice but missed the note about the Broker's Caravan.

This type of event may be funny in movies but truly we need to make certain events like these do not happen. The house sold just after that event and I am sure the boys were glad.

This will probably not be my last experience with real estate and nakedness but I  continue to try to warn residents before showing up. Our office was buzzing about this for weeks!
