Farwell to Deputy Jeremiah MacKay
San Bernardino County Sheriff's Detective Jeremiah Alan MacKay.
End of Watch 2/12/2013
San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Detective Jeremiah Alan MacKay was fatally shot in the line of duty while apprehending a dangerous fugitive in the San Bernardino Mountains. Jeremiah was a 15 year Veteran with the department and was assigned to the Yucaipa Sheriff’s Station.
Jeremiah is survived by his wife, his 4 month old son, his 4 year old step-daughter, his mother, father and sister. Jeremiah was respected and loved by all who knew him.
He loved his family, his career, and so proud of his heritage; Scotch-Irish. He played the bagpipes and belonged to the Inland Empire Emerald Society and sat on the board as the Sergeant of Arms. He was the society’s lead piper and played the bagpipes on numerous occasions for many other fallen officers.
His celebration of life was honored today on 02/21/2013 at the San Manuel Amphitheatre in Devore, CA. His funeral was attended by over 9,000 consisting of police officers from all over the country, family, friends, and community residents. The members of the Inland Empire Emerald Society proudly played the bagpipes to say good-bye to a fellow friend, bagpiper, and fallen officer.
The Sheriff’s Department Dispatch gave him his “Final End of Watch Radio Call” at 1:00 pm today and thanked him for his service to the department and paid the untimate price. "Thank you Detective MacKay and go with the Lord". It was definitely one of the saddest moments of the funeral. Also when Sheriff McMan handed the American flag to Detective MacKay's widow; the flag that had been draped across the casket. It was so touching and meaningful for all who watched.
Rest in peach Jeremiah and thank you for all the good you have done in your life and all the people you brought happiness to. You will not be forgotten.
*Detective MacKay was chasing a fugitive who had stalked and killed 3 and wounded 2 (police officers and their family). Then this fugitive kidnapped another couple and stole their vehicle. MacKay had fearlessly chased this wanted fugitive into a cabin in the San Bernardino Mountains where he fought until he was fatally shot but MacKay and his partner are accredited with locating and helping to bring this nationwide manhunt to an end. The Sheriff's helicopter, waiting to fly wounded MacKay to LLUMC as his fellow deputies tried to to rescue him as bullets kept coming from the cabin. Unfortunately MacKay didn't get to the hospital in time.
Jeremiah MacKay- a true American hero. Rest in Peace!
