Farwell to Deputy Jeremiah MacKay

Farwell to Deputy Jeremiah MacKay

San Bernardino County Sheriff's Detective Jeremiah Alan MacKay.

End of Watch 2/12/2013

San Bernardino County Sheriff's Detective Jeremiah Alan MacKay. San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Detective Jeremiah Alan MacKay was fatally shot in the line of duty while apprehending a dangerous fugitive in the San Bernardino Mountains. Jeremiah was a 15 year Veteran with the department and was assigned to the Yucaipa Sheriff’s Station.

Jeremiah is survived by his wife, his 4 month old son, his 4 year old step-daughter, his mother, father and sister. Jeremiah was respected and loved by all who knew him.

He loved his family, his career, and so proud of his heritage; Scotch-Irish. He played the bagpipes and belonged to the Inland Empire Emerald Society and sat on the board as the Sergeant of Arms. He was the society’s lead piper and played the bagpipes on numerous occasions for many other fallen officers.

His celebration of life was honored today on 02/21/2013 at the San Manuel Amphitheatre in Devore, CA. His funeral was attended by over 9,000 consisting of police officers from all over the country, family, friends, and community residents. The members of the Inland Empire Emerald Society proudly played the bagpipes to say good-bye to a fellow friend, bagpiper, and fallen officer.

San Bernardino County Sheriff's Detective Jeremiah Alan MacKay.

The Sheriff’s Department Dispatch gave him his “Final End of Watch Radio Call” at 1:00 pm today and thanked him for his service to the department and paid the untimate price. "Thank you Detective MacKay and go with the Lord". It was definitely one of the saddest moments of the funeral. Also when Sheriff McMan handed the American flag to Detective MacKay's widow; the flag that had been draped across the casket. It was so touching and meaningful for all who watched.

Rest in peach Jeremiah and thank you for all the good you have done in your life and all the people you brought happiness to. You will not be forgotten.

*Detective MacKay was chasing a fugitive who had stalked and killed 3 and wounded 2 (police officers and their family).  Then this fugitive kidnapped another couple and stole their vehicle. MacKay had fearlessly chased this wanted fugitive into a cabin in the San Bernardino Mountains where he fought until he was fatally shot but MacKay and his partner are accredited with locating and helping to bring this nationwide manhunt to an end. The Sheriff's helicopter, waiting to fly wounded MacKay to LLUMC as his fellow deputies tried to to rescue him as bullets kept coming from the cabin. Unfortunately MacKay didn't get to the hospital in time.

Jeremiah MacKay- a true American hero. Rest in Peace!

Kristin,

Thank you for sharing this tribute.  Our first responders, police, fire and medics are real life hero's.  They deserve our appreciation and respect.  You've done a good job with this post.

Hi Dan,

Yes our first responders put their lives on the line everyday and unfortunately Deputy MacKay made the ultimate sacrifice. Thanks so much for your kind words.

Hi Michelle,

Yes it was televised and they had it at the Glen Helen Amphitheater because they expected a large crowd. This was one of the largest manhunts across our nation and in Mexico to find this fugitive and Detective MacKay and his partner (who is still in the hospital severely injured) were the first to find him and return fire. The entire state of California is safer tonight thanks to Deputy MacKay, as if this fugitive had gotten down the mountain he would have killed more cops and the public.

Police cars, Fire trucks, bikes, swat vehicles all came from all over the country to say thank you and good-bye. Spectators, kids, and bikers all stood and watched the coach pass by with hundreds of bikes and cars on the 13 mile trip from the mortuary. The 9-11 vehicle also came to the funeral and will be adding MacKay's name to it as they add all fallen firemen and law enforcement officers. Thanks for stopping to comment.

Hi Kristin, These valiant men and women who look out our safety should always be honored for their sacrifice. This is wonderful way to add your own testimonial that will last for perpetuity. Thank you for sharing this.

Hi William,

So glad no one from San Diego PD got in his way that horrible morning. What made him turn back and head for Riverside and later  Big Bear. Luckily your city was spared. Thanks so much for the kind words.

How terribly sad for the family. Hopefully she and her children will get the support they need emotionally.

Hi Sussie,

The department will be there for her as well as the families but the loss they are having to deal with should never have to happen. He is a real hero just like John Wayne and he rode off into the sunset in Heaven. I believe he will see his loved ones again. Unfortunately his baby son will never know him.
