Throwback Thursday-My First Cruise to Alaska

The inner beauty of Alaska  is unbelievable and you feel like you are on top of the world. We almost did not take the land tour but so glad we did. We have been back twice since and loved every moment.

This photo was taken by someone walking by  but it was perfectly aligned and we used it as our Christmas photo that year too.

Just a note here: That morning up in Denali, I told my husband I had to check my email and would be there in 5 minutes. I found a computer behind the service desk and after logging on, I was horrified to find a BPO had been kicked back. Now this bank had given me many REO's so I didn't want to ignore it for 6-8 hours. We didn't have apps on our BlackBerry phones back then so I had to take plain white paper and a pencil and do long math to amend the figures that my assistant had inserted incorrectly. My poor husband was holding the bus that was taking us to the Denali Park on a tour and they were ready to go. Finally finished and ran to meet the bus. They were all cheering as I approached and yes it was embarassing.

The main thing is you can be mobile anywhere including Mt McKinley. I now carry an iPad or small laptop and most hotels have WiFi in the rooms.

Alaska is a great place, and your pictures are too.
I am looking forward to going back again soon.

Since you are experience cruisers please tell me what cruise company(ies) you recommend. We're planning to make that trip  in the next year or two, and now I know we should definitely do the land tour too. Thanks for sharing this throwback!

Good morning Kristin. I travel a lot but have never been to Alaska. It's on my list: hopefully next year.

Hi Paul Henderson

It was a spectacular trip and have gone twice since. I still think it is the most beautiful place I have ever been to so far.

Hi Bob Crane

I never tire of Alaska and I like retracing the steps my parents took as they lived in Fairbanks just before I was born.

Hi Kathleen Luiten

The first time I went to Alaska I went on Carnival and it was fine except there were so many kids. That line has had many problems since so I would never go on a Carnival ship now. Then we took Princess the second time and it was wonderful and I have no complaints whatsoever. The rest of our cruises have been on Celebrity and I highly recommend them and very few kids. Also Celebrity strives to keep the ships clean and virus free.

Hi Bruce Walter

You and your family will enjoy Alaska. I never really appreciated the beauty of nature until I went to Alaska. Now it consumes a lot of my time taking photos when I am not selling real estate.

Hi Christopher Pagli

We always go the 3rd week of July and sometimes Mt. McKinley is already fogged in so usually no Kodak moments there. The cruises run from May-Early September so you are really at the very end of the season since winter comes fast and the waters start icing up. Check with the cruise lines but I think July is perfect and it is not too hot during the summer.

Hi Inna Ivchenko

Oh yes, and good thing I have good math skills to do it by hand. I think I went through 5 or 6 pages of printer paper nearby as I was in a big hurry and writing really big with the pencil (hate pencils) sitting nearby. But the rest of the trip was fun and I really enjoyed our bus trip that day into Denali Park.
